Health tourism
Definition
Health tourism is travelling to another country for medical, dental or cosmetic treatment. In Türkiye it is regulated by the Ministry of Health, and clinics and agencies serving patients from abroad need an authorisation certificate.
What does it mean for a clinic?
When a patient living in Germany flies to Istanbul for implants, a hair transplant or eye surgery, that is health tourism. For the clinic the work starts with the first message and ends long after the treatment: medical intake, a quote, a deposit, flights and hotel, the airport pickup, the treatment days and the check-ins once the patient is back home.
Replying quickly in the patient's language, spelling out the price and what it covers, and planning every leg of the journey in advance are what set this work apart from treating local patients. Patients often know the clinic only through messages and documents, so tidy, reliable communication does much of the work of earning their trust.
