No-show

Definition

A no-show is a patient who misses an appointment without cancelling or letting the clinic know. The empty slot is lost income and time that could have gone to another patient.

Why do patients miss appointments?

Most no-shows come down to forgetting, cancelling being a hassle, or an appointment booked too far ahead. So the most effective measures are simple: send a reminder beforehand, let the patient confirm or cancel with one click, and avoid booking further ahead than you need to.

Recording no-shows matters too. If the same person misses twice, you might ask them to confirm next time or take a deposit. Tracking the no-show rate by practitioner, appointment type and weekday shows where the problem is concentrated. A cancellation beats a no-show: making it easy to cancel frees the slot for someone else.
