Fit to fly

Definition

Fit to fly means whether a patient is in a state to travel by plane after treatment or surgery. The decision belongs to the doctor who carried out the treatment; the clinic team passes the decision to the patient in writing with a date and does not confirm the return flight before it.

Who decides whether a patient is fit to fly, and what does the clinic do?

The UK's NHS says that major surgery combined with flying increases the risk of a blood clot, which can be life-threatening. The same page gives day ranges to avoid flying by type of surgery; these are general information, not personal medical advice. The right time for a patient is set by the doctor who carried out the treatment.

The clinic team's job is organisation: giving the doctor's decision to the patient in writing with a date, keeping the return flight and hotel nights flexible accordingly, updating the patient's hotel and transfer together if the flight changes, and sending a patient who reports a complaint to the doctor immediately.
